Interstellar Expanse

Focus on Bobby Tahouri

Tell us a little bit about the inspiration for Interstellar Expanse.

I’ve always been drawn to the mystery and grandeur of space as a subject matter for music. For this album, I channeled my inner Jerry Goldsmith and tried to evoke the same feelings I felt growing up watching films and tv shows set in space. While writing this album, I thought about the isolation and solitude associated with space exploration as well as the awe-inspiring and otherworldly moments that one might experience with space travel and exploration. I didn’t want to get too heroic or dark and tried to find the right balance between the ethereal and epic. Instrumentation-wise, I leaned more on an orchestral palette with minimal and subtle beds of synths and electronic textures.

Walk us through the process working with the WCPM team on this project.

I had an amazing experience working with WCPM on this album, and the process couldn’t have gone smoother. My producers Aaron Gant and Sean Gould came up with the concept of creating an album devoted to all things space, exploration and adventures into the universe.

They were very clear with what they wanted in the initial brief and gave great feedback on all the tracks. They also organized orchestration, recording sessions at Ocean Way Nashville as well as the final mix. I just focused on writing the music while the team took care of everything else. Dream project.

What was the most rewarding part of the creation of this album for you?

Recording a live orchestra in Nashville at Ocean Way Studios. Hearing a talented live orchestra play your music never gets old, and I’m grateful that we had the opportunity to do so on this album.

Where do you see this music being used?

I envision space and sci-fi scripted shows, trailers and maybe even news programs. Hopefully this will be used in any project that needs epic scoring moments, and I’m sure there are many possible uses I haven’t even thought of yet.

What are some of the challenges and rewards of composing for sync?

It’s always challenging not knowing if or when your music will be used. On the flip side of that, randomly hearing your music on TV when you least expect it is one of the most rewarding feelings out there.

What inspires you musically?

My morning coffee and deadlines.
